AI Assistant ​

The AI Assistant can query and organize Locus data with natural language. It is useful for turning one intention into several operations, but it should not replace your review of important dates, project boundaries, and destructive changes.

What It Can Do ​

Depending on the current tool set, the Assistant can:

  • Create, find, edit, complete, and organize tasks
  • Create and query projects, categories, tags, Tag Groups, and Custom Filters
  • Query by date, status, action list, project, tag, or location
  • Apply bulk changes to a clearly identified set
  • Summarize results and render charts in the conversation

Capabilities can evolve. A reliable request identifies the objects, scope, fields, and desired result.

Querying and Changing Data ​

For important operations, use two steps:

  1. Ask the Assistant to list the objects and proposed changes.
  2. Verify counts, titles, dates, and projects, then explicitly authorize execution.

Take special care with deletion, cancellation, bulk project moves, date changes, and hierarchy edits. Natural language can be misunderstood. Verify the result in the affected project, Schedule, or filter.

Built-In and Custom API Providers ​

AI Settings offers two modes:

  • Built-in: no API setup, but requires eligible Pro access and is subject to daily and weekly limits.
  • Custom API Key: uses your provider, model, and key; built-in limits do not apply, and billing/data handling belong to that provider.

The current custom list includes OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, Gemini, Groq, Qwen, Zhipu, MiniMax, Doubao, DeepSeek, Moonshot, xAI, Mistral, and a custom-compatible endpoint. Provider models, endpoints, and tool-call compatibility can change.

API keys are held in local secure storage and are not synced as ordinary task data. Configure them again on a new device when needed.

Data and Privacy ​

To fulfill an AI request, relevant conversation content and Locus data are sent to the selected AI service. The built-in service uses your iCloud account to verify Pro entitlement and usage. A custom provider follows its own terms.

  • Do not put secrets in tasks, notes, or prompts if you do not want them sent to the provider.
  • Read a custom provider’s privacy and billing policies before use.
  • A chart in the conversation does not automatically become project data.

Reliable Use ​

  • Specify the project, date range, and status.
  • If names are ambiguous, ask for a list before selecting.
  • Use an exact date and time zone for cross-region work.
  • Create a manual backup before large AI changes.
  • If a request fails or is interrupted, inspect actual data before retrying.

Assistant vs. Mac MCP ​

The Assistant runs inside Locus. MCP lets an external AI client connect to Locus on Mac. Their entry points, approval model, and data paths differ. See MCP.
